2014 Hope for Healing Walk

hope

Will you consider joining us for the Dream Center Clinic’s (DCC) Hope for Healing Walk? Imagine Physical Therapy is a sponsor of the event coming up on October 4th from 8am-Noon. The walk is an easy 1.7 mile miles around Park Circle, and begins and ends at North Charleston High School. At the finish line, friends, family and walk participants will be treated to an after party which will include food, jump castles, games for kids, face painting and live music. This event is to raise financial support for the operations of the DCC. Without the Dream Center Clinic, patients would be utilizing the emergency rooms for their primary care costing hospitals an estimated 10 million dollars annually. More important than money, however, patients treated at the DCC are given hope they may be healed. If the DCC wasn’t available to assist these people, they most likely would receive no medical care. For more information on the DCC, please click here.   A bit more information on the walk. It’s free for all participants, however the DCC is asking that each walker help to raise money individually or as a team. There is no minimum amount to raise–every little bit counts! T-shirts will be given to the team or individuals who raise more than $200 per person. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 fundraisers. Please consider joining us as a participant for this great cause!

Headache Help is Here!

Posted on September 16, 2014 by

Eli2 When you think of physical therapy, you probably think about knee replacements and shoulder surgeries, but did you know that some physical therapists (ah hmmm, definitely all of us at Imagine!) are experts in relieving headaches? From person to person, headaches vary in frequency, location, intensity, and duration. There are all kinds of different causes of headaches, from sinus issues to migraines to allergies. Many of our regular headaches fall in the category of cervicogenic headaches, most commonly called tension headaches. These headaches are actually musculosketal in nature, rather than part of a disease process. They may be the result of a neck or jaw problem, poor posture, fatigue, or stress.

A problem in the neck, head, or jaw–such as an injury or arthritis–can lead to tension in the muscles at the back of the head and to increased pressure on the nerves to the face and head. Poor posture can cause these muscles to become overworked, which can trigger a headache.   So what can Imagine do for your headaches? Depending on our assessment at your first visit, we work with you in any or all of three areas. Our first area of focus is improving mobility in your neck and spine. Most physical therapists use techniques such as massage, ultrasound with electrical stimulation, and manual stretching—as do we at Imagine. Above and beyond these basic approaches, however, our therapists have a couple extra tricks up our sleeve. First, the majority of our therapists are trained experts in Mulligan’s techniques, which are specialized manual therapy techniques designed to restore your spine’s normal alignment and movement patterns. Click here to read a bit more about our Mulligan’s training—(which will be completed on September 20, 2014!). In addition to Mulligan’s, our therapists are proficient in dry needling, a technique that uses acupuncture needles to release stubborn bands of muscle fibers and alleviate pain (we are receiving further training in dry needling the weekend of September 27-28 2014!). Yes, we’re telling you we’ve had GREAT success sticking necks and heads with needles with the intent of relieving pain (and no, we don’t cause it!).   Our second area of focus when working to relieve your headaches is to strengthen muscles in your neck and upper back. Studies are clear that improving strength in the muscles that stabilize your neck and scapula significantly improve headache outcomes.   Our final area of focus looks at ways to improve your posture, thereby taking stress off your upper back and neck muscles. This includes some strengthening, some stretching, and some basic everyday tips to improve your spinal alignment. When necessary, we can also help you modify your work station at home or in the office to make sure your computer, chair, and keyboard are in the optimal position.

So, if you are getting a lot of headaches lately or have always suffered with headaches and have never found relief, give us a call. Consider also referring a friend or family member who struggles with headaches. Our techniques have changed lives—yours or theirs may be next!
