Imagine’s June BOGO* of the Month: Stronger Neck Muscles

Posted on June 24, 2014 by

*Imagine’s version of a BOGO (Buy One, Get One) is to take a healthy habit you’re already participating in (exercises, stretches, cardio, nutrition, etc) and share a small change or addition so that you receive maximum benefit for your efforts.

For this month’s BOGO, we’re here to let you know how to strengthen deep neck muscles while performing abdominal exercises. So-strengthen your core and get your neck muscles strong FOR FREE! Neck muscles, you may ask? Who the heck cares about neck muscles? Although you may not see many people walking around flexing these muscles, please consider they are very important and there’s clinical evidence that correlates headaches and neck pain to weakness in deep neck flexors. At Imagine, we’re experts at fixing headaches and neck pain, and we do it everyday. Headaches and neck pain get BETTER FASTER and stay BETTER LONGER when your exercises include strengthening the muscles in the front of your neck.     Steps to Strengthening Neck Muscles: 1. While you’re working on your six pack, make sure you keep your arms across your chest. 2. Tuck your chin toward your chest and keep your eyes on your chest.

Correct neck position, although our model is not looking at his chest (the sun was a little bright!).

  3. Go ahead and do your crunches while maintaining this neck position. 4. Don’t let your chin jut up. Remember you only

have to curl up until your shoulder blades lift off the floor. You should NOT experience any pain. If you do have pain…da…DO NOT CONTINUE TO SELF INFLICT PAIN!

Cake Picture for Newsletter (1)

This month we’re highlighting two great recipes, the first is a wonderful Sweet Potato Cheesecake courtesy of Park West patient Beth Gannon (thanks so much Beth!). Clearly PT at Imagine isn’t all Pain and Torture, or our patients wouldn’t bring in such deliciousness! For our second recipe, with gardens ripe for pickin’, we present to you a Tomato, Basil and Feta Salad. This recipe is easy, healthy and wholesome…and will give you something to do with all of those tomatoes!!!
Please email your favorite recipes to us at We’d love to give them a try and include them in next month’s newsletter. And, of course, feel free to make your favorite recipe and bring it by one of our clinics. We are always grateful!

Sweet Potato Cheese Cake

Crust: * 1/3 c. margarine * 1/3 c. sugar * 1 egg * 1 1/2 c. plain flour   Filling: * Two 8 oz. packages of cream cheese, softened * 3/4 c. sugar * 1 lb. cooked and blended sweet potato * 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg * 1/4 tsp. cinnamon * 1 tsp vanilla flavoring * dash of salt * pinch of ground ginger * 3 eggs   Topping: * 9 oz. cool whip *1/2 c. toasted coconut * 1/2 c. toasted pecans

Crust: Combine margarine and sugar (do not substitute butter for margarine-it will cause the crust to slide down the sides when baking). Beat in egg. Add flour and mix well. With floured fingers, press dough evenly on bottom and all the way up the sides of 8 inch springform pan. Chill in freezer 15 minutes then bake at 400 degrees for 4 minutes. Cool on a wired. Or….you could buy pre-made crust!!!   Filling: Cream the cheese and sugar, blend in blended potatoes and seasonings. Mix well. Add eggs one at a time and mix well. Pour into cooled, baked crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 55 minutes. Cool pan on wire rack. After completely cooled, gently remove pan sides. Chill in refrigerator overnight or until completely chilled.   Topping: Spread coconut and pecans on baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for about 10-15 minutes until browned. Stir occasionally to promote even browning. After cheesecake is chilled throughout, add cool whip topping. Sprinkle with toasted coconut and pecans on top.

Tomato, Basil and Feta Salad
