Imagine’s BOGO* of the Month: Stronger Abdominals

Posted on May 22, 2014 by

*Imagine’s version of a BOGO (Buy One, Get One) is to take a healthy habit you’re already participating in (exercises, stretches, cardio, nutrition, etc) and share a small change or addition so that you receive maximum benefit for your efforts.

It’s beach season and most of us are thinking about what we look like in our bathing suits. Regardless of what you’re wearing, whether a bikini, speedo or Muu-Muu, you should care about having strong abdominals (even if no one except yourself will see them!). Abdominal strength is essential for overall physical health. Let’s face it though–no one is interested in adding hundreds of crunches to their routine!!! The great news is, extra crunches definitely aren’t essential to strengthening your abs. We’re here to tell you one secret to strong abs.   Our tip to you is this: draw your belly button in toward your spine. This isn’t quite as simple as just sucking your stomach in. Instead, as you draw your belly in, brace your stomach like someone is about to punch you in the gut. Hold your stomach in this position for the duration of the exercise you’re performing.   We’ll demonstrate this months BOGO using a common exercise many of you already perform, the overhead press. Please remember that although our young model is demonstrating this BOGO by performing an overhead press, this technique can be added to ANY exercise you’re already performing.

Overhead press w/out abdominal activation. Incorrect.

Good Eats and Treats: May ’14 Edition

Posted on May 21, 2014 by

As the summer rolls in and we gear up for backyard fun with our family and friends, share two recipes that are sure to go over swimmingly (yes…pun intended). The first recipe is a classic Key Lime Pie. Our Mount Pleasant clinic will vouch wholeheartedly for this recipe as their day was made when a wonderful patient presented it to them (thanks Ms. Baldwin!!). The second recipe is a Super Summertime Meat–Marinated Flank Steak. It’s mouthwatering–we dare you to try it. Do you have a recipe you love? We kindly request you prove to us how good it is….by bringing it by the clinic closest to you of course! Who knows, maybe you’ll be highlighted in next months newsletter? (Please feel free to email us recipes as well, or leave them in the comments section below!)

Ingredients *1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs *½ cup granulated sugar *4 tablespoons (1/2 stick butter) melted *2 (14-ounce) cans sweetened condensed milk *1 cup key lime or regular lime juice *2 whole large eggs *1 cup sour cream *2 tablespoons powdered sugar *1 tablespoon lime zest   Directions *Preheat the oven to 375 F. *In a bowl, mix the graham cracker crumbs, sugar and butter with your hands. Press the mixture firmly into a 9-inch pie pan, and bake until brown, about 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool to room temperature before filling. *Lower the oven temperature to 325 degrees. *In a separate bowl, combine the condensed milk, lime juice, and eggs. Whisk until well blended and place the filling in the cooled pie shell. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes and allow to chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. *Once chilled, combine the sour cream and powdered sugar and spread over the top of the pie using a spatula. Sprinkle the lime zest as a garnish on top of the sour cream and serve chilled.   —Original recipe courtesy of Emeril Lagasse via Food Network _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Marinated Flank Steak

Ingredients *2 (2-1 ½ pound) flank steaks *½ cup vegetable oil *¼ cup teriyaki sauce or soy sauce *1 tablespoon onion, minced (time saver—replace with onion powder, ½ teaspoon) *3 tablespoons honey *½ teaspoon garlic powder *½ teaspoon ground ginger   Directions *Using a fork, prick both sides of meat and put in large shallow dish. *Combine all other ingredients and pour over meat. *Cover and marinate 24 hours in refrigerator. Turn every now and then. *Grill steaks over hot coals 4 to 5 minutes on each side. Slice across grain into thin slices. Serves 4 to 6.   NOTE: The longer you marinate this meat, the more tender it is…however, if you forget to marinate the day before, orange juice is a great tenderizer and adds a nice flavor. Add some to your marinade and the meat will be tender in half the time. To balance out the orange juice addition, add a bit of each other ingredient as well –the outcome is still delicious with a little extra sweetness!
