“The thigh bone connected to the hip bone, the hip bone connected to the back bone, the back bone connected to the shoulder bone….”
We’ve all heard that song, right? If not, check it out here. Have you ever stopped to think about what connects all of our fabulous bones and body parts and what holds everything in place? Your answers might include: cartilage, muscles, ligaments, tendons and, of course, SKIN! And these are all very correct answers indeed! However, one of the most important ‘connectors’ involved in every move we make is oft overlooked. Introducing: FASCIA (‘fasha’). A June 2011 article in Runner’s World explains fascia as follows: “It wraps around each of your individual internal parts, keeping them separate and allowing them to slide easily with your movements. It’s strong, slippery and wet. It creates a sheath around each muscle; because it’s stiffer, it resists over-stretching and acts like an anatomical emergency break. It connects your organs to your ribs to your muscles and all your bones to each other. It structures your insides in a feat of engineering, balancing stressors and counter-stressors to create a mobile, flexible and resilient body unit. It generally keeps you from being a big, bone-filled blob.” For more information on fascia, check out this fantastic article. And let us say right now…just because this article appeared in an ‘athletes’ magazine, fascia issues are a problem for everyone. Your feet, neck, back and shoulders are the most common place to experience fascia pain, and if you drive a car, hoover over a computer or experience stress, then you’re an ideal candidate for fascia pain. What we’re concerned with at Imagine is puttin’ a fixin’ on your fascia. And we are experts!
Our treatment methods include the following: Massage– by using different massage and soft tissue techniques, we are able to help stimulate bloodflow and soften restricted tissue Cupping– we have adapted an old Eastern technique and incorporated suction cups to help release adhesions between fascia and muscle; this is an Imagine specialty…and it works! Exercise– a phrase you’ll hear often from us…. “motion is lotion”!!!! Stretching– just like tendons and muscles, we are able to stretch fascia with specific exercises targeting tight areas If you have ‘unexplained’ pain, please don’t hesitate to call us! It very well may be a fascia issue, and we would be happy to put a fixin’ on your fascia! Imagine Physical Therapy has locations in Mount Pleasant, Charleston/West Ashley and on Daniel Island.
